Farmer Christi in WV

So now I find myself house/pet sitting in rural Bluefield, WV. All I can say is that it has been an experience. I have been sitting for: 1 dog, 3 cats, 1 bearded dragon, 35 ducks, and 12 chickens! Mom has helped me getting all the birds into their coops in the evenings and I couldn’t have done it without her.

We have been watching lots of videos and reading about ducks and their behaviors. If you are interested in seeing how ducks are herded, check out https://youtu.be/FHIy9j7duW8.

We have also learned a LOT about duck mating. Mom & I feel for the poor females. If you want to know more, a great article can be found at https://www.tyrantfarms.com/duck-mating/.

I feed and water the ducks and chickens twice a day. I also gather their eggs a couple times a day. While here, we have been getting 12-14 eggs a day. There is also a small garden with fresh tomatoes, peppers, and basil.

I hope you enjoy learning about the ducks as much as we did!

Mattie’s Place

If you are looking for a beautiful setting to enjoy the mountains and have a good meal, look no further than Mattie’s Place in Burke’s Garden, VA. Mattie’s is located over the mountains and in the valley in Virginia.

If you want the look and feel of Pennsylvania Amish Country, look no more. Mattie’s was staffed by two Amish women who keep the store well stocked with all of the Pennsylvania treats you could want. Mom and I shared a barbecue sandwich on homemade sourdough, some Pennsylvania snack mix, and Kutztown cream soda. To top it off, we had homemade oatmeal whoopie pies that you couldn’t resist. They sell fresh baked goods, bulk pantry staples, and lots of good food.

Crab Orchard Museum

I learned so much about early life in Tazewell County, VA at the museum. I lived here for many years and still discovered a lot of things. The area saw a lot of farming and coal mining over the years. The museum just opened the Corn Maze for the fall and it is in the pattern of a quilt, one of the many local handicrafts you see in the museum. The outside has an early village with buildings for cooking, curing meats, cold storage, corn cribs, metal working, and shoe making. Absolutely worth the $5 admission!
