Touring Glacier National Park with Sue Ann Jaffarian

The last two days have been so much fun.  I received a message from author Sue Ann Jaffarian saying that she was headed to Glacier & hoped to meet up.

If you aren’t familiar with Sue Ann Jaffarian, pick up one of her books at your local library or bookstore. I began reading her Odelia Grey mystery series many years ago & it has always been one of my favorites. She began traveling full-time in her Winnebago Travato camper van four years ago. I was lucky enough to schedule her speak at my library in Calabash, North Carolina when she was in town. I learned a lot about her lifestyle & she inspired me to start my journey on the road.

Badlands National Park, South Dakota

I am doing some backtracking on my travels in South Dakota & am starting with the Badlands. The landscape is unlike any other park I have visited.

Badlands National Park is 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles, & spires along with the largest mixed-grass prairie in the US.

The Third Time is the Charm:  Glacier National Park

Montana, I have now landed in Glacier National Park.  I am living in Glacier at the Apgar Campground & working as a shuttle driver on the Going to the Sun Road.

One of the stunning views along the Going to the Sun Road.

Minuteman Missile National Historic Site Philip, South Dakota

As I continue on my journey, I am posting in chronological order until I get to my current location, Glacier National Park.  Today’s post is especially appropriate for the 4th of July because it takes a look at protecting our country during the Cold War years.

Families in the far western portion of South Dakota knew there were nuclear missiles near them.  There were hundreds of Minutemen missiles hidden beneath the sunflowers & wheat, the cows & the corn of America’s Great Plains during the Cold War.  Minuteman Missile National Historic Site commemorates this perilous period of world history.
