Saint Mary’s Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption

Last week I visited “America’s Notre Dame” in Covington, KY.  Located just outside Cincinnati, the facade of this Gothic cathedral was designed and built after the Notre Dame in Paris.  Ground was broken in 1894 and the dedication took place 16 years later in 1910.

Shrine of Saint Patrick
Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe
In the apse, the cathedral has over 300 relics of Catholic saints.

Being able to travel, see sights and learn so much about the world brings me so much joy. I hope that what I see brings you some joy, too. Until next time…

Hi! I am Christi, a full-time RV traveller since August 2021. I have always loved to travel, but COVID-19 put a stop to that. I was fast approaching 50, my condo was being placed up for sale and I was ready for a major change. Originally from a tiny town in rural Southwest Virginia, I am the mother to one son and a rescue Shih Tzu, Cappy. For the last 20 years, I worked in public library systems around the Charlotte & Myrtle Beach areas. I met some amazing people and made great friends along the way. Follow along on my adventures as I travel the US. I hope that our paths will cross one day!

  1. Good morning 😃

Did you know how you would brighten this cold morning?

Husband Greg lived in Covington in same home all years until leaving for College in Cincinnati.

His maternal grand parents, immigrants from Germany. I believe that many Germans settled in that area.

His father’s people were rice, cotton and soybean farmers in Arkansas, of ☘️ Irish extraction.

You know him, having had dinner in our home once upon a time you and your little 🐕 dog. So delighted are we that you are having fun even though you have such 😢 difficult working schedule.

Keep the faith baby! Maggie Butler

    1. The cathedral is about 30 minutes away. We are really lucky to have so many great places so close to home. Downtown Cincinnati is about 40 minutes, depending on traffic.

  5. Grand pictures, brought back a memory of the time my brother-in-law was ordained a deacon in St. Mary’s and how in awe I was of the beauty of it. Don had a memory also, of the time he lived in Covington and was flying a kite which got away and ended up on one of the towers, lol. Love all your pictures and history of places you visit. You get a chance try some Goetta for breakfast, it is made in Covington, there is even a Goetta festival.
