Joplin History & Mineral Museum, Joplin, MO

Part 2

Are you ready to take a step back in time? The museum has so many exhibits that will make you reminisce about the good old days. I hope you enjoy seeing these as much as I did. I would love to hear your stories!

The Drugstore

We had several local drugstores in our area and they all had soda fountains. I grew up in the 70s and my son in the 90s. We both still talk about the delicious grilled sandwiches and flavored sodas.

The Doctor’s Office

Some things just don’t change.

I bet your doctors office doesn’t have this!

The Beauty Shop

My mom’s mother, Elizabeth Compton, had a beauty shop in Bluefield, VA. She did hair at Elizabeth’s Beauty Shop for over 58 years. Going to her beauty shop was routine and I loved it.

My Nanny, Margaret Elizabeth Compton

Remember these hair dryers? Nanny’s chairs were pastel colors with a handle so you could elevate your legs and read a magazine.

Nanny let me wash her hair in the shampoo bowl, put curlers in her hair and put her under the dryer before messing up her hairdo.  She also did manicures while ladies were under the dryer.

This is Nanny’s husband, Pappy, aka Robert Preston Compton. He is painting the beauty shop here and was always “piddling” around, as he called it. He loved to keep everything running and looking good. I learned from the best!

The other thing I loved was playing with Nanny’s cash register or telephone .

Kids have cell phones now, but it doesn’t compare to this cash register and phone!

This is from a time when you had to know someone’s phone number and it took 5 minutes to dial it!

Writing this post has made me emotional. I have smiled, laughed and cried as I think about my grandparents. They were good hardworking people and I was so lucky to have them in my life as long as I did.

I called mom and asked her lots of questions. The next time I am back home, we are going to sit down with our photo albums and look through them.

A high school picture of my beautiful mom, Brenda Compton Conley and her dog Fluffy. Love you!

Hi! I am Christi, a full-time RV traveller since August 2021. I have always loved to travel, but COVID-19 put a stop to that. I was fast approaching 50, my condo was being placed up for sale and I was ready for a major change. Originally from a tiny town in rural Southwest Virginia, I am the mother to one son and a rescue Shih Tzu, Cappy. For the last 20 years, I worked in public library systems around the Charlotte & Myrtle Beach areas. I met some amazing people and made great friends along the way. Follow along on my adventures as I travel the US. I hope that our paths will cross one day!

  1. Oh…I loved reminiscing with you, Christi! Not that it still worked, but there was a wooden wall phone in our house..and we had a party line ! Coal bin (we did heat with coal in my early childhood)..an old icebox…milk delivery..doctor made house calls for my frequent strep throat/earaches….ahh the memories!

  2. I remember the cases with the penny candy in them. And I remember all the beauty shops with those hairdryers! Thanks for taking me down memory lane. Great memories!

  3. I remember Party Lines, and if the call was important, ask the other party to hang up and then call their party back 10-15 minutes later. I remember the old heavy hairdryers too, and the hairdryer bonnets you could put over your rollers, if you had a lot of hair, and go to sleep with it on. Also ate at a Pharmacy/Soda Shop in Canada a number of years ago.

  4. Your pictures brought back memories for me too. There’s REXALL drug store in north Florida that still has a lunch counter, I ate there with my sister in law last time I visited her.
