Choteau Creek Brewing Company & Diamond A Cattle Company, South Dakota

While traveling across South Dakota, I had two overnight stays at Harvest Host locations.

Choteau Creek Brewing Company

Choteau Creek Brewing Company is a 5th generation farmstead run by Paul & Lisa Schoenfelder in Wagner, South Dakota. The land has been in the family since 1896. Their goal is making the most of the land & creating community. They have done a great job with both.

I drove down the rural dirt road to the property not knowing what to expect. Paul was there to direct me where to park. It was another stay with electricity & I was glad for it. I settled in, fed Cappy and then it was time for my dinner.

I was pleasantly surprised to see lots of trucks parked at the brewery. Inside was bustling with lots of locals enjoying a cold beverage. I took a seat at the bar & several folks said hello. Then the obvious, “Is that your rig parked out there?”

People continued to stream in & a nice couple sat next to me & we had a lovely conversation. They were locals and filled me in on Wagner. They also gave me the names of places to visit when I reached the Black Hills.

As the night went on, the brewery filled & it was standing room only. I had a glass of wine & one of Lisa’s homemade flatbread pizzas before turning in after another day of driving.

Diamond A Cattle Company

Diamond A Cattle Company was a great stay in a quiet western setting. This was another site with electricity and Crystal was a wonderful host. She drove down & filled me in on their location in Pukwana, South Dakota.

Their family lives the western lifestyle from rodeos to raising Corriente cattle to bucking bulls. It is in their blood. They have a 1940s tourist cabin and old schoolhouse on the property, too. They host a variety of events including mounted shootings, barrel races, team penning and more. Diamond A Cattle Company has both an indoor and an outdoor roping/rodeo arena.

After a good night’s rest, I bought homemade beef jerky that Crystal’s daughter sells. I tried the Pineapple Teriyaki & Cranberry Pecan & they were delicious.

Each Harvest Host stay is a unique experience & really gives a look into how the locals live.

Hi! I am Christi, a full-time RV traveller since August 2021. I have always loved to travel, but COVID-19 put a stop to that. I was fast approaching 50, my condo was being placed up for sale and I was ready for a major change. Originally from a tiny town in rural Southwest Virginia, I am the mother to one son and a rescue Shih Tzu, Cappy. For the last 20 years, I worked in public library systems around the Charlotte & Myrtle Beach areas. I met some amazing people and made great friends along the way. Follow along on my adventures as I travel the US. I hope that our paths will cross one day!
