The next day trip mom and I made was to Pompeii. We had a wonderful tour guide, Julia, who is an archeologist. Her commentary made the tour & it wouldn’t have been nearly as enjoyable without her.

I visited a traveling Pompeii exhibit at Discovery Place in Charlotte, NC, years ago but never knew how vast the excavation site was. If you are going to visit, I would highly recommend a guided tour.
Nearly 2,000 years ago, Pompeii was a bustling city located in what is now southern Italy. But in the summer of A.D. 79, the nearby Mount Vesuvius volcano erupted. It spewed smoke and toxic gas 20 miles into the air, which soon spread to the town. Almost overnight, Pompeii—and many of its 10,000 residents—vanished under a blanket of ash.
Pompeii was basically lost and forgotten until it was rediscovered in 1748. Thanks to excavations, which are still going on today, scientists have been able to figure out almost exactly what happened on that terrible day.

The photos below follow our path through Pompeii.

The roads were very interesting. They were sloped to drain liquids & raised stepping stones were placed for people to use to cross the roads. You can also so the ruts worn into the roads by heavy carts.

The artistry of the buildings & remnants of the interiors were stunning. The tile work was preserved and still as beautiful as when it was first laid.

Pompeii was fascinating & I took way too many photos to share, but here are some of my favorites!

I hope that everyone enjoyed their holidays. I wish each of you a happy & healthy 2023!

Beautiful pictures! Must be haunting to know the entire town was buried in one day!

What perfect pictures! When I taught I chaperoned a group of students to Europe.
When we got to Pompeii two of the boys said they were going to stay on the bus.
The reason they gave was “It’s just a bunch of ruins.” Youth is truly wasted on the young. Thank you for taking me back to mostly good times. I love you.

Thanks for the memories. I thought Pompeii was one of the most interesting places in Italy and, as you know, there are many.

WOW, how awesome to walk through the ruins that was once one of the most beautiful cities in its time, I`ve seen the excavations of the city and the people also frozen in time, a horror for them but, fascinating for us to see that past time in history, I`d love to have been there exploring with you!!
