Our time in Italy was flying by! Mom & I departed early the next morning headed to Positano, the most famous & iconic village on the Amalfi Coast. It borders the Mediterranean Sea to one side & the peaks of the Lattari Mountains to the other. The entire Amalfi Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Positano became a wealthy market port from the 15th to 17th century & continued to grow in popularity over time. They traded fish & other food products.
Positano prospered during the 16th & 17th centuries, but by the mid-nineteenth century, however, the town had fallen on hard times. More than half the population emigrated, mostly to America.
Positano began to attract large number of tourists in the 1950s, especially after John Steinbeck published his essay about Positano in Harper’s Bazaar in May, 1953. Steinbeck wrote:
Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.

Limoncello
Lemons & Limoncello are two things we saw throughout our day in Positano. Our tour guide told us where to find the best lemon ice & we certainly enjoyed ours!
If you’ve never had Limoncello, it is mainly produced in Southern Italy, especially in the region of the Amalfi Coast. It is second most popular liquor in Italy after Compari. It is served chilled as an after-dinner digestive.
The photos above are of rooftop gardens in Positano. There were lemons, flowers & beautiful trees decorating the mountainside.
The other product Positano is known for is the mozzarella cheese. For lunches, we had a tomato & mozzarella salad, prosciutto & fresh melon & a Margherita pizza. The food was delectable & we had enough left over for dinner!
After lunch, we strolled around town & window-shopped. The stores had some amazing things, but I have limited space in the RV. Pictures & stories are what I treasure most anyway.
After a long day, it was time to head back to Rome. We left with a gorgeous sunset to guide the way.
