Exploring Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Lanzarote was the first of three of the Canary Islands we visited. It is the 4th largest of 8 inhabited islands. It’s such a unique landscape of volcano landscape that UNESCO declared the island a Biosphere Reserve in 1993.

I have a lot of photos in this post because they are the only way to do the island justice. I hope you enjoy our adventures here.

The view cruising into Lanzarote.

The first stop we made was in the small fishing village of Arrieta. It has a population of about 900.

We stopped in a local cafe for a mid-morning coffee. We had another of the local specialties, a Barraquito.

Visit https://www.guidetocanaryislands.com/barraquito-coffee-recipe/ to learn more about Barraquitos.
The local liquor flavors for Barraquitos.

Our next stop was in the town of Haría. It had a wonderful variety of trees, flowers & art.

Lanzaloe Park

The next stop was at Lanzaloe Park, the largest ecological Aloe vera plantation in Europe. They have over 250,000 aloe vera plants.

We sampled some of the fresh aloe.

Jameos del Agua

The Jameos del Agua cave is the product of the ceiling collapse of a lava tube formed more than 3,000 years ago, when the eruption of the Corona volcano took place.

There are approximately 100 stairs in each direction to access the cave.

Facts about Jameos del Agua

  • Jameo is the aboriginal word to refer to the part of the lava tube where the roof has collapsed
  • The lava tube was created by the eruption of Montana Corona. It is 6km long. Jameos del Agua is located in the tunnel section near the coast.
  • The first public areas of Jameos were opened in 1966, but it was fully opened in 1987
  • It is home to a unique species of blind crabs: a yellow and white crustacean that is only 1cm long. They are easy to spot is the salt lake.
  • Part of the lava tube goes deep into the Atlantic and is referred to as Tunnel of Atlantis.

Stay tuned for more from our next island, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria!

Hi! I am Christi, a full-time RV traveller since August 2021. I have always loved to travel, but COVID-19 put a stop to that. I was fast approaching 50, my condo was being placed up for sale and I was ready for a major change. Originally from a tiny town in rural Southwest Virginia, I am the mother to one son and a rescue Shih Tzu, Cappy. For the last 20 years, I worked in public library systems around the Charlotte & Myrtle Beach areas. I met some amazing people and made great friends along the way. Follow along on my adventures as I travel the US. I hope that our paths will cross one day!
