Crossing Colorado & Arriving in Taos

My drive to Taos continued through Denver, Colorado.  I crossed the Colorado state line & stopped for a few quick photos before proceeding south.

A beautiful Colorado sunset.

I stopped for dinner at Cracker Barrel before settling in for the night. While waiting for a table, I browsed the store.

For those of you trying to cut down on your coffee consumption, the mug on the right is a perfect solution! The coffee cup on the left is standard size.

After a good night’s rest, I woke up to a beautiful blue sky & a perfect day to finish my drive to Taos.

If you look closely in the photo above, you will see a snow fence. If you’ve never encountered one before, there is a great article about their origin & purpose from the online magazine Slate. These fences are found on many of the highways out west.

The coolest thing about snow fences? They’re not designed to “catch” blowing snow—in fact, they’re not really a barrier at all in the traditional sense. Instead, the slats of the fence slow down the wind as it passes through. And the wind then drops some of the snow it’s carrying.

This quick video from the University of Wyoming Extension gives a closer look at snow fences & their design.

After driving all day, I arrived in Taos just in time to catch my first sunset in New Mexico.

One of the things I have discovered on my travels is just how much I enjoy looking at the sky. When I was working full time, I never took the time to look up. I spent my days in an office with no windows & never saw much daylight. Now that my days are spent driving, all I do is look & learn on the road.

The colors in the sky, the clouds & the landscape are just stunning. You will be seeing many more New Mexico sunsets in the posts to come. I hope they bring you as much enjoyment as they do me.

Hi! I am Christi, a full-time RV traveller since August 2021. I have always loved to travel, but COVID-19 put a stop to that. I was fast approaching 50, my condo was being placed up for sale and I was ready for a major change. Originally from a tiny town in rural Southwest Virginia, I am the mother to one son and a rescue Shih Tzu, Cappy. For the last 20 years, I worked in public library systems around the Charlotte & Myrtle Beach areas. I met some amazing people and made great friends along the way. Follow along on my adventures as I travel the US. I hope that our paths will cross one day!

  1. New Mexico is one of the four or five (?) states that we have not visited. We are really enjoying the beautiful scenery and especially the sunsets you have been able to experience.

  3. This is a beautiful area of the U.S. and adored by artists because of the “light” refracted off the variations of rock formations. You will want to visit everything Georgia O’Keefe, Ten Thousand Waves and the numerous hot springs and hiking trails. I’m so happy to hear you will be there til April.
