The Northern Lights in Taos, New Mexico

I had hoped to see the Northern Lights while I was living in Alaska, but I was only able to catch a slight glimpse the last night there. Little did I know that I would get a fantastic light show when I arrived back in New Mexico.

The Taos Ski Valley is nestled in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, where the Rocky Mountains begin. At night, when I’m driving home from work, there is very little light pollution. When the moon is out, it creates some spectacular photos.

This year, I have a new phone & artributed the photos to the improved camera. However, I discovered that the next 18 months will bring the strongest northern lights in decades.

I took photos several nights last week, and some of my favorites are below:

Holiday time is upon us. I wish each of you a happy, healthy, safe season with your friends and family.

Happy New Year!

Hi! I am Christi, a full-time RV traveller since August 2021. I have always loved to travel, but COVID-19 put a stop to that. I was fast approaching 50, my condo was being placed up for sale and I was ready for a major change. Originally from a tiny town in rural Southwest Virginia, I am the mother to one son and a rescue Shih Tzu, Cappy. For the last 20 years, I worked in public library systems around the Charlotte & Myrtle Beach areas. I met some amazing people and made great friends along the way. Follow along on my adventures as I travel the US. I hope that our paths will cross one day!

    1. I finished up in Alaska during the middle of September & began my drive to Taos, NM. I decided to do another winter term season here because I enjoyed it so much last year! I absolutely love New Mexico, too. It is so different from anything on the East Coast. I hope you’re doing well & I miss seeing your smiling face!

    1. Kim, I appreciate your kind words. It’s hard to believe that I’ve been traveling for over 2 years now. The time has flown by in the blink of an eye. I have visited so many places and seen a lot of this beautiful country, but it’s the friends I’ve made along the way that mean the most. Friends like you. I can’t tell you how grateful I am that our paths crossed and we are able to keep in touch. Have a wonderful holiday and a happy 2024! Love you.

  4. Hey Christi! Looking to be in Taos for the 2024 “possible” showing of the Northern Lights. Can you give us an idea of where we might plant ourselves for the night? We most likely stay in a hotel and drive somewhere but “where” is the question? Thank you.

    1. I have seen them at the top of the mountain in Taos Ski Valley. I am usually drive home between 9:30 – 10:00 pm. As you leave Taos Ski Valley driving toward town, there are several areas without any light lights. Because the slopes close at 4 pm, there is little traffic coming up and down the mountain at that rime of night. Pull over into one of the pull outs, turn off your carlights, sit back & enjoy. I’ve had the best results using night mode on my camera. The sky here is absolutely loaded with bright, shining stars & on the right night, the Northen Lights. Hope they’re out when you visit Taos!
