After having a busy day in Lanzarote, I had planned a dolphin & whale watching cruise. After having so many full days of sight-seeing, I thought we might enjoy a laid back day on the water.
The chances of spotting animals in the Canary Islands is very high. There are 30 species of whales & dolphins in the area. The water there stays temperate year-round & many animals live there permanently.

Our tour guides were extremely professional & took us to the best locations. Our boat was at full capacity & had passengers of all ages. We did see lots of dolphins & a few whale tails.

One of the dolphins we saw & actually got on camera!
We have a few tips for whale watching:
- Get a good seat & prepare to watch for animals; however, I think we had just as much fun people watching!
- Go prepared with sunscreen & a secure hat. The wind is strong, so be sure to take only what is necessary.
- Don’t eat or drink on the boat. Almost everyone who did was sick.
- Don’t try to stand up & take photos. The boat rocked as I stood up & threw me on poor mom. We both decided to follow the next tip.
- Stay seated. We saw so many people stumbling around the boat. There were also people trying to go up & down the steps. Our seats were front row for viewing!
The boats used for whale & dolphin watching have a Barco Azul (blue boat) logo, a seal that shows that they comply with regulations & legislation to ensure that the marine reserves are respected and to guarantee the protection of the animals that live in the waters of the Canary Islands.
